Lisa Copen, founder of National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness week (September 14-20, 2009) recently asked her Twitter followers to suggest good things to say to a person who is chronically sick.
Here are some of the replies:
***I’m going to the grocery, what can I get you?
***I’m bringing dinner Thursday. Do you want lasagna or chicken?
***Can I get your kids for a play date? My kids are bored.
***I can’t sit still. Got any laundry I can fold?
***Can I bring a few friends over to clean your house fast?
***I don’t have any idea what you are feeling, but I will always listen.
*** I saw these flowers & thought they’d cheer you today
***I don’t know what to say, but I care about you.
There are more at the website. And here are others I came up with:
***Can I do a run to the video store/library for you?
***Can my teenager mow your lawn/wash your car?
***Want to play a board game?
***(If their child is the one who’s sick) Can I stay with your kids while you and your spouse catch a movie?
***Did you hear the funny story about…?
***Do you remember the time that you and I…?
***(If the person is able to do this) Shall we putter in your garden together? (Or a different activity that the person wants to do but needs a helping hand in order to pull off.)

These are such great suggestions. I hate to say it, but I'm kind of sick of my friends just saying 'feel better'. I love them dearly, but that statement makes me a little angry because I won't.
