MyLymeData2018 speaker on “The Future of Lyme Diagnostics”
One of the thorniest issues facing anyone who hopes to get properly evaluated and treated for Lyme disease is diagnostic testing.
Lyme disease testing that is approved by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) relies on commercial “two-tier” antibody tests. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Raphael Stricker, these tests miss more than half of patients with chronic Lyme disease symptoms.
Better testing already exists, Dr. Stricker maintains, and should be validated by the CDC. Furthermore, new tests are being developed that will detect a broader range of Lyme bacteria and tick-borne co-infections.
Dr. Stricker will speak on “The Future of Lyme Diagnostics” at MyLymeData2018: Seeking Cures Together. The patient education conference will be held April 7, 1-5 pm, at the San Ramon Community Center, 12501 Alcosta Blvd., San Ramon, CA.
Dr. Stricker, an internist and hematologist, is co-principal investigator of the MyLymeData project.
He is an internationally recognized leader in tick-borne disease diagnosis and treatment, a board member of LymeDisease.org, and past President and board member of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). He also serves on the Lyme Disease Advisory Committee for the California Department of Public Health.
MyLymeData, a patient registry launched in 2015, is a longitudinal study. Participants answer a series of online surveys regarding their Lyme disease experiences over time.
With more than 10,000 people enrolled, it is the largest study of Lyme disease patients ever conducted, with more than a million data points for scientists to analyze.
Researchers from UCLA and Claremont McKenna College recently received an $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to work with data from the registry.
Other speakers at MyLymeData2018 include Lorraine Johnson, CEO of LymeDisease.org, who will present the latest results from MyLymeData; investigative reporter Mary Beth Pfeiffer, who will discuss her new book,“Lyme: The First Epidemic of Climate Change”; and Dr. Christine Green, who will talk about Lyme-related pain and Herxheimer reactions.
