“Medical Detective” series brings information you need to know
Starting today, LymeDisease.org is publishing weekly installments of the Medical Detective series by Dr. Richard Horowitz, one of the top Lyme-treating doctors in the country.
The first one is An overview of Lyme disease signs and symptoms. If you’re new to the Lyme world, it’s an excellent introduction. However, even if you’ve been at this a while, I bet you’ll learn something new from it.
Future installments delve deeper into symptoms, testing, co-infections, and more. Look for a new blog every week.
So, who is Dr. Horowitz, anyway?
For a peek at his fascinating background, I refer you to the first article he posted on Substack last summer, How Did the Medical Detective Come to Be?
You’ll learn about his journey from the US to Belgium to attend medical school (in French!), his studies of Tibetan Buddhism, and his mentorship under a brilliant diagnostician.
He returned to the US for advanced training in internal medicine and then established his own office. He recounts:
When I first opened my practice in upstate New York, as a country doctor I hoped to get to know my patients intimately, to be a part of a community, and deal with common issues like hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. I never dreamed I’d encounter a mysterious new tick-borne illness called Lyme disease, with a strange mix of never-before-seen symptoms that was soon ruining people’s lives.
Located in a Lyme hot spot, Horowitz’s practice was inundated with patients suffering from tick-borne infections. When he realized that many did not improve with standard treatments, he dedicated himself to finding better answers.
Over the years, he has treated some 13,000 patients, conducted groundbreaking research, and was a founding member of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). He has authored two bestselling books, “Why Can’t I Get Better?” and “How Can I Get Better?” and continues to write and speak extensively on chronic disease.
