The past eight months have been an ordeal for relatives of Kay Hagan, a Lakeland High [FL] graduate and former U.S. senator [from North Carolina].
Hagan was hospitalized in December with puzzling symptoms and eventually diagnosed with Powassan virus, a tick-borne disease that caused brain swelling and left her unconscious for 43 days.
Hagan, 64, spent 5½ months at a rehabilitation center in Atlanta before being released July 1. She continues to undergo therapy, and at this point she remains unable to walk and is limited in her ability to speak. READ MORE.
I wish Senator Hagan a speedy and complete recovery. I remember when doctors were having difficulty diagnosing her “strange symptoms”. Now that more of out elected officials and their extended families are contracting tick borne illnesses, maybe they will have compassion for the rest of us who are suffering. Maybe they will require Medicare, Medicaid, and all other health insurance plans to pay our medical bills. We all deserve the same health care, free to concentrate on getting better rather than how medical bills will be paid. Not having collection agencies and lawyers calling for payment. All of us should contact our elected officials and demand equal treatment.
The brain is a strange organ when you least expect it, it awakens and surprises you. I wish a speed recovery to this Senator. I know first hand about diseases related to the brain having my own daughter suffering from Neuroborreliosis. She has been in remission since 2014 but is now out of remission from an elevated WBC. She has insurance but doctors in Florida are passing her around because of her Lyme Disease and don’t want to help her.
