A rabbi’s roadmap for healing from chronic Lyme disease
By Rabbi Melinda Bernstein
The psyche is a beautiful mystery, an intricate landscape that blends conscious thoughts, hidden desires, and untold stories of the past.
It holds the keys to our growth and most profound transformations. Though we may never fully comprehend its complexities, every step taken to understand the psyche reveals beauty in both its darkness and light.
This year, the convergence of Hanukkah and Christmas on the same day feels like a cosmic reminder that light can pierce through even the darkest of times. Both holidays celebrate hope, resilience, and the miracle of light overcoming darkness.
You may be facing the psychic pain of chronic Lyme disease, but through the use of this Roadmap, you too can transform that suffering into a deeper sense of meaning and purpose, mastering your journey and removing the roadblocks along the way.
As I share my story, I hold the intention that it becomes a beacon, a light that helps guide you through your own moments of darkness toward healing and wholeness.
In April 2024, I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, a condition likely contracted while I was living in Northern California between 2011 and 2015. During those years, I embraced intimacy with my partner, whose music, medicine, and support nurtured my spirit and transformed grief into guiding wisdom. It was a deeply empowering time in my life, one that fortified my strength to succeed in my role as a freelance Rabbi, all while caring for my elderly mother.
Digging deep
When I began treatment for Lyme, I had to dig deep within myself—drawing on every resource to stabilize, restore, and trust the unfolding journey. By the summer of 2024, my blood was clear, and my psyche was slowly but surely shedding the remaining debris, allowing new light to emerge.
You may feel completely broken at times, but striving for wholeness through your own repair work is always possible. In Hebrew, the word tikkun means ‘repair,’ and it’s a guiding principle in Judaism and Kabbalah.
Tikkun calls us to heal the broken pieces within ourselves and the world—facing our pain and transforming grief into growth, one step at a time. Grief and forgiveness are deeply intertwined; by embracing grief with compassion, we open ourselves to profound transformation, ultimately turning pain into light and contributing to the healing of ourselves and the world.
Feeling overwhelmed is natural, especially when faced with chronic conditions like Lyme. Healing takes time, and patience is essential.
Removing obstacles
My Roadmap, which I have used since 2008, is designed to help you master your own healing journey and remove obstacles—reflecting choices that may resonate with you. Remember that each small action you take matters. Reclaiming your vitality and joy is possible, even if progress feels slow. And though the path can feel lonely, a greater force is always guiding you forward.
As we stand at the year’s end, it’s a time to reflect, release, and renew. The Roadmap supports you in letting go of what no longer serves you and stepping into a future filled with hope. Healing is within reach, and even small steps can lead to profound transformation. Below, you’ll find The Roadmap—a guide designed to help you master your healing journey, remove roadblocks, foster resilience, cultivate joy, and build genuine connection in your life as you move into this new chapter.
The Roadmap
- Responsibility: Accept where you are now and take ownership of your healing journey. This is the foundation for all other steps.
- Open to Change: Embrace flexibility and openness to new approaches. Healing means evolving beyond habits that no longer serve you.
- Awareness: Cultivate awareness of your body, mind, and emotions. Listen deeply, observe patterns, and notice what brings relief or exacerbates symptoms.
- Determination: Stay committed, even when challenges arise. Determination is the grit that keeps you moving forward and empowers you in your journey.
- Manifestation: Visualize your healing, set clear goals, and take practical actions to make those goals a reality.
- Allowing: Let go of the need to control every aspect of the healing process. Trust in the journey and create the space for your body and spirit to heal.
- Possibility: Embrace the possibilities that lie ahead. Visualize vitality and purpose, and let that vision motivate and uplift you.
